The Classic Lovegrove 1 day Workshop
“It has often been said that my photographs appear easy to take and indeed, most of them are. I find the biggest problem my clients face, especially when working with flash, is the tendency to overthink the situation. I will unlock the creative world of shooting portraits on the street by showing you how to find amazing light and how to make amazing light. I’ll share my passion, knowledge, enthusiasm and fun with you whatever the weather.” Damien Lovegrove
The 2022 workshops are now ready for booking.
I usually run these workshops on weekdays between late April and mid-July each year. That is when the weather tends to be warm enough to shoot outside all day and when school children are in class studying. On weekends and school holidays, the city centre of Bristol is overrun with people enjoying themselves. Bristol is my favourite city in the UK and a happy stress-free place to shoot. We can shoot under cover if it is raining too.

On this Urban Portraits workshop you will be capturing beautiful portraits taken on the city streets. We will work together in the quiet business district and the waterfront areas of Bristol.
I’ll show you how to find and use beautiful natural light. We will also be working with the lightweight Godox AD200 flash units, used off camera to create the punchy pictures that I have become renowned for. I will provide all flash triggers and lighting equipment so you can travel light.
I will be using one zoom lens and two prime lenses. The zoom is the equivalent of a 24-50mm on full frame and the prime lenses are both short telephoto and are the equivalent of 65 & 85mm on full frame. If you have a monopod and are comfortable using it then feel free to bring one, however, I do not recommend bringing a tripod.
Morning and afternoon refreshments are included as well as lunch in a harbourside restaurant with an extensive menu catering for all dietary requirements so you can relax and enjoy your day.
These pictures were all shot by me on Urban Portraits workshops in Bristol and show the kind of images we will be shooting together. I will explain all the settings and the lighting setups in a clear and logical way. I’ll look after you and ensure that you will have the knowledge and skills to practice these techniques by yourself.
What you will take away from the day
You will come away from this Urban Portraits workshop in Bristol feeling immensely inspired and motivated to get out and practice what you’ve learned. My passion and enthusiasm for photography are infectious, confidence-boosting and I’ll guarantee you’ll capture images you can be proud of.
I will impart my knowledge and experience as I guide you through the creative process. Whilst learning how best to interact with your subject, you’ll master how to use off-camera flash and naturally available light for dramatic effect.
You’ll pick up invaluable tips on exposure control and composition as well as how to orchestrate a photoshoot to get the best out of your subject. This workshop is limited to just 5 participants so that everyone has plenty of time and personal guidance from Damien.
We’ll be shooting around the waterfront areas of Bristol including the old railway sidings and dockyards. Expect a full training day with high-energy ‘let’s make it happen’ attitude as well as my usual bucketful of enthusiasm. I guarantee you’ll come away from this event with your mind buzzing and recharged with motivation.
What you can expect from me – your tutor
I devised this Urban Portraits workshop in Bristol many years ago because I thought it would go down well. Over 100 workshops later and it has become a worldwide classic. Clients have come on this workshop from all corners of the globe and I’ve ensured it has lived up to expectations. Your learning experience is paramount to me. I have an honest approach to sharing my knowledge and skills gleaned over 35 years. Be prepared to soak up invaluable tips and information because these skills will give you the confidence you need to take your photography to the next level.
I am kind, sharing and patient. I take care to communicate in a way that reaches every level. I won’t leave you struggling if you are lost in camera menus and I won’t ignore you if you are quietly getting great photographs. What I’ll do is to show you how to build rapport and communicate with our model to make structured poses look quite relaxed and natural. Nothing is left to chance. Everything has a purpose and I’ll share with you how I style each shot. I have an understanding of light that I’m well known for and I’ll teach you how I see the light. Once you know what to look for everything becomes easier. If we are using the flash we will be recreating a striking natural light look. This attention to detail will ensure you capture portfolio grade images and feel empowered to capture fabulous photographs on your own after the workshop too.
My workshops are not just about learning, they are fun, creative adventures. You will leave this workshop a more confident photographer with images to be proud of and memories to last a lifetime.
Our model for the 7th of June is Lydia Cooke.
Whatever the weather we will be creating magic together. I only run these workshops between May and the start of October to avoid the coldest months. I don’t mind a bit of rain but I do want our model to be warm.

Reviews from previous participants of the Bristol Urban Portraits workshop
What can I say?
The day with Damien was amazing, full of information on lighting and set-ups with a stunning model who was very professional indeed. Discovering useful shooting locations that I would never have thought would work through to camera and technique advice I found the whole experience absorbing and entertaining in equal measure.
Some of my images taken on the day are my best to date and I will most certainly be investing in the simple lighting set-up that Damien was using on the day. Can’t wait to put some of what I have learnt into practice.
Think my next aim is to spend some time with Damien in his studio or learning about multiple lighting set-ups and working with a model in a studio environment.
Five stars are not enough, ten would be more like it!
I love Damien’s work so to get the opportunity to spend a day in Bristol passing on his knowledge was a dream. A brilliant day, took me out of my comfort zone and came away with new ideas for urban photography. Would definitely recommend a day with Damien and would do it again if the opportunity arises. Definitely 5*
An absolutely outstanding day spent with Damien and model Veronique on Urban Portraits. The shoot was not rushed and every one of our small group was given ample time to get their shots in the bag. Damien’s style of teaching is second to none, and his ability to impart knowledge in a totally relaxed manner means that you walk away, with a great understanding of what you’ve learned. Some of my long-standing lighting “theories” were turned on their head, and the quality of the resulting images were just stunning. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has a genuine desire to take their outdoor portraits to the next level, you will be delighted with what you can achieve.
I had waited a long time to be able to attend one of Damiens workshops. From the moment I signed up I was impressed by the speed of response and the care and attention to detail in the pre-workshop communications and the day itself was very well organised and executed to ensure we got the maximum benefit from our day and Damien is so enthusiastic. I have no hesitation in recommending them.
Brilliant day produced by a profession enthusiastic and passionate photographer. Damien makes it so easy to get interested in the subject he is teaching. He is patient and helpful throughout the day and I have ended up with some great photos of the day. The small team of 5 was ideal for the shoot and it was great to associate with such a nice group. I cannot finish without complimenting DL on the choice of model (Veronique). She was beautiful and most of all very accommodating letting us get our shots in, nothing was too much trouble for her. I am now asking myself why it took me to long to engage with Damien and look forward to our next meet.
