Venice – The most beautiful city in the world
I’ve been wowed by Venice every time I’ve visited the city. I love to visit before the tourist season starts or when it is over because it is cooler and everything is easier and far more relaxed.
This October we will more or less have the city to ourselves. The textures, tones, and colours of Venice are unique and coupled with the charm of the canals, make it the perfect location for a street portraits workshop. Venice is a city that should be on every photographer’s bucket list.
These shots show the nature and character of our locations and picture styles. I may make more of our flash kit but I’ll be led by the light for sure.
Each day will start in the foyer of the Foscari Palace hotel near Ca’ D’oro
Day 1 – 6 or 7 hours of shooting comprising of a 3 hour early morning shoot and a 4 hour dusk shoot. For the rest of the day, you are free to explore the city, capture your cityscapes or recharge your batteries back at your hotel.
Day 2 – Meet up at 08:00 Shooting on location until noon then after a break, shooting again from 16:00 until 20:00.
Day 3 – Meet up at 08:30 Take a boat to Burano. Free shoot in Burano before meeting up again for lunch. After lunch a shoot with Jolien in Burano before heading back to Venice. Shoot at sundown to dusk and twilight.
This workshop will suit intermediate to advanced photographers. If you know how to adjust manual settings on your camera you will be fine. No previous experience of working with off-camera flash is required. I’ll teach you everything you need to know.
I’ll show you how to communicate with Jolien in a way that keeps the photographs looking relaxed and natural. You will become a more confident photographer over our three days of shooting in Venice, especially when it comes to photographing people.
Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to photograph fashion style street portraits in Venice. This workshop will be fun, you’ll make new friends and you’ll have fabulous images to cherish forever.
Venice is so picturesque. You’ll want time out to explore the vistas, take in the sights and scenary. There is a calmness about Venice in the afternoon that makes it a perfect time to wander the streets with your camera in hand.
Camera kit suggestions
- A Mirrorless or DSLR camera. APS-C, full frame or medium format with full manual control.
- A variety of lenses covering the equivelent of 20mm to 150mm on full frame.
- A tripod and a 10 stop ND filter for optional long exposure cityscapes and dusk shots. A monopod might be useful too if you are familiar with their use.
- A waterproof camera bag. It does rain in Venice and the city looks great when the streets are wet.
- If your camera is a DSLR you may need a Hoodman style loupe to asses flash exposure.
I will supply all the lighting kit needed for the model photography sessions on this workshop. In the morning sessions we will be using a Godox AD1200 Pro with its remote head on a boom arm and stand. I’ll have 18 and 24cm reflectors with diffusers for the flash. I will bring an AD200 Pro with me too and a Scatterflash. I will supply flash triggers for each of the makes of camera in our group. Just let me know what camera you will be using ahead of the workshop. I have dedicated triggers for Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, Sony, Panasonic, Pentax and Olympus.
Venice looks amazing whatever the weather.
It’s all in the planning
“Success happens when preparation meets opportunity”
I made a trip to Venice in June 2019 to check out our locations for this street portraits workshop. I have shot in Venice several times before and I’ve co-hosted a workshop there at carnival time so I had a pretty good idea about where to shoot. I put pins in my map and went all over the city to establish the best locations to use. I updated my map and drew up a plan.
As you can see from the map we will be shooting mainly in the central area of the old city. Castello, San Marco, Cannaregio, and the Dorsoduro districts. We will set up in the back streets and the piazzas where there is space to set up a lighting stand and to shoot. On day three of this wonderful street portraits workshop, we have scheduled a boat trip to the island of Burano, famous for its colourful houses.
Our model: Jolien
These pictures of Jolien were shot in Belgium on a recent trip. I shot with her on a live stage show and for a product shoot. I was very impressed with her professionalism, kindness and work ethic.
What you can expect from me – your tutor
I devised this Venice workshop in 2019 because I was in love with the textures and romance of the city. The relaxed nature of Venice out of season without the cruise ships is wonderful. Your learning experience is of utmost importance to me. I have an honest approach to sharing my knowledge and skills gleaned over 35 years of shooting professionally full time. Be prepared to soak up valuable tips and information because these skills will give you the confidence you need to take your photography to the next level.
I am kind, sharing and patient. I take care to communicate in a way that reaches every level. I won’t leave you struggling if you are lost in camera menus and I won’t ignore you if you are quietly getting great photographs. What I’ll do is to show you how to build rapport and communicate with our model to make structured poses look quite relaxed and natural. Nothing is left to chance. Everything has a purpose and I’ll share with you how I style each shot. I have an understanding of light that I’m well known for and I’ll teach you how I see the light. Once you know what to look for everything becomes easier. If we are using the flash we will be creating striking fashion inspired looks. This attention to detail will ensure you capture portfolio grade images and feel empowered to capture fabulous photographs on your own after the workshop too.
My workshops are not just about learning, they are fun, creative adventures. You will leave this workshop a more confident photographer with images to be proud of and memories to last a lifetime.

I love Damien's work so to get the opportunity to spend a day in Bristol passing on his knowledge was a dream. A brilliant day, took me out of my comfort zone and came away with new ideas for urban photography. Would definitely recommend a day with Damien and would do it again if the opportunity arises. Definitely 5*
I learned about Damien Lovegrove when I was searching the internet for Classic Hollywood look.
After looking into his work to create magical classic Hollywood looks straight out of the camera without much editing using continuous lights, I was very much in love with his photography techniques and lighting skills.
During our 1:1 Training, Damien explained his lighting techniques which are sometimes very subtle yet... read more
We had a four day 'Adventure' in Morocco - great locations proposed by the local Mr Photography, MK. Damien Lovegrove was really helpful,, directing a range of excellent scenes with a delightful UK model, changes of clothes and accessories. Damien also gave me some really useful tips about ways to merge ambient light and strobes. A big success. Thanks.
Brilliant day produced by a profession enthusiastic and passionate photographer. Damien makes it so easy to get interested in the subject he is teaching. He is patient and helpful throughout the day and I have ended up with some great photos of the day. The small team of 5 was ideal for the shoot and it was great to associate with such a nice... read more
