This photograph was taken in 2014 at an abandoned hotel and casino on the top of Bokor Mountain in Cambodia. The wind howled through the building, and occasionally, clouds rolled in. This place has had a chequered past. It was the last stand of the Khmer Rouge, who used it as a strategic stronghold until the 1990s. This historic building is now unrecognisable and has since been transformed into an inelegant hotel.
I asked Yulia to keep her shoes on and carefully make her way up the stairs. I had an inspired vision for this shot that was quite hard to communicate at the time. Yulia really couldn’t understand my concept, but she loved the image when she saw it on the back of the camera. This shot remains one of my favourite photographs of my career.
