I captured these test shots in the old part of Fribourg last year in August 2020. They were part of a test shoot for this workshop and show some of the locations that we will visit on this exciting multi-venue event.

22nd August 2021

Fabulous textures and light

The variety of our shoot locations, near Friburg might seem a bit odd but how we embrace these extreme shooting scenarios can set the tone for our regular shoots. By working in dark but beautiful caves then out into the August sunlight will ensure that we are streching our concepts and ideas to the max. We will work together on this creative journey that none of us will want to end. I will share with you my train of thought at every stage of the shooting process and each session will start with the end in mind.

A Lovegrove Location Fashion Portrait Workshop

Holistic approach: It has often been said that my photographs appear easy to take and indeed, most of them are. I find the biggest problem my students face, especially when working with flash, is the tendency to overthink the situation. I will unlock the creative world of shooting portraits in dark and empty spaces showing you how I use continuous light and how to balance flash with available light. We will also be out and about shooting in full sun. (If the weather allows).

Each of our shoot locations has dry zones to shoot in so we can work seamlessly whatever the weather.

Together we will shoot head shots, wide shots, beauty and fashion to a magazine standard. I’ll share my passion, knowledge, enthusiasm and fun with you.

Style concept: Fashion photography is esentially photography of clothing but it extends to lifestyle aspirational imagery intended to trigger purchase decisions in magazine readers. Fashionable portraits takes the concept of aspirational imagery and switches the subject of the image from the clothes to the wearer.

Times: 9.30am – 5.00pm
Tutor: Damien Lovegrove
Genre: Fashion Portraits
Group size: 6 Participants
Model: Misha
Location: Fribourg, a nearby cave and an abandoned mansion

On this Location Fashion workshop you will be capturing beautiful portraits taken in a variet of interesting locations. We have exclusive use of the mansion and the caves for our event. The shoot zoenes in ‘Old Town’ Fribourg will be shared with passers by.

Morning and afternoon refreshments are included as well as a light lunch at a local restaurant with an extensive menu catering for all dietary requirements so you can relax and enjoy your day. Lunch details TBC.

Proven system: We will work together as a group throughout the day and when we are shooting with flash, we will be shooting one person at a time as this is the most effective way of working. We will rotate within the group and I’ll be on hand to ensure that you have all the shots that you want before we move on to the next scene or setup.

Ability requirements: I will share my settings as we go and help you dial in the settings that suit your taste. Don’t worry if you do not have extensive knowledge of shooting with flash, after all, you are here to learn. As long as you are comfortable working in manual mode and can change the ISO, shutter speed and aperture independently on your camera you will be fine on this workshop.

Lighting matters: I’ll show you how to find and use beautiful natural light. We will then use the ambient light as one element in our lighting mix and might well remove it from our shots completely. We will take control of our lighting and our Fribourg locations will become our studio.

I will provide all the lighting equipment that we will use during the shoot so that you can travel light. We will be using Godox AD200, AD600 and AD1200 flash units. I will supply Godox triggers for Sony, Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, Fujifilm, Panasonic and Olympus. We will also be using some continuous light sources from Lupolux and perhaps a smoke machine.

Lenses: I will be using one zoom lens and two prime lenses. My zoom is the equivalent of 24-50mm on full-frame and the prime lenses are both telephoto and are the equivalent of 85mm and 200mm on full-frame. If you have a monopod and are comfortable using it then feel free to bring one, If you are used to working with a tripod feel free to bring it. If your lens has OIS or VR, or your camera body IBIS or anti-shake, then you will not need a monopod or tripod.

Location, location, location

This historic Swiss mansion will be one of our main shoot locations for this workshop. It sits in well kept grounds with a swimming pool and summer house. The interior rooms are empty and provide us with a fabulous studio type space to explore.

The caves that we will shoot in were cut into the solid escarpment by hermit Johann Dupré and his helper Johann Liecht between 1680 and 1708. It is a prevelidge to have the opportunity to work in such a fabulous unspoilt spot. Clean and free from modern day grafitti, these caves will provide us with a perfect opportunity to both embrace the ambient light and to suppliment it with light of our own. The caves are located just a 20 minutes drive from our start location.

We will start and end the day at the terrace cafe of Le Sauvage Hotel in Fribourg. There is parking just 50m from the Hotel. We will travel by car to the various locations. We will share cars to avoid parking issues at various points and to be ecologically minded. Details to follow.

Several of the old town locations that we will shoot in are withing 200m of Le Sauvage Hotel, our start and finish point. The caves are a 20 minute drive and the mansion is a 25 minute drive from the caves. We will have lunch out and about. Lunch is included in the workshop cost.

Misha, our Model

Misha, shares her time living between Prague and Zurich. A photographer in her own right, Missha is sought after by the fashionable elite to capture their weddings. She gained her creative edge while studying at the New York Film Academy. I first shot with Misha in Prague and she has agreed to model for us on this one off workshop in Fribourg.

What you will take away from the day

You will come away from this Fashion Portraits workshop in Switzerland feeling immensely inspired and motivated to get out and practice what you’ve learned. My passion and enthusiasm for photography are infectious, confidence-boosting and I’ll guarantee you’ll capture images you can be proud of.

I will impart my knowledge and experience as I guide you through the creative process. Whilst learning how best to interact with your subject, you’ll master how to use off-camera flash and naturally available light for dramatic effect.

You’ll pick up invaluable tips on exposure control and composition as well as how to orchestrate a photoshoot to get the best out of your subject. This workshop is limited to just 6 participants so that everyone has plenty of time and personal guidance from me. Expect a full training day with high-energy ‘let’s make it happen’ attitude as well as my usual bucketful of enthusiasm. I guarantee you’ll come away from this event with your mind buzzing and recharged with motivation.

What you can expect from me – your tutor

I devised this Urban Portraits workshop in Bristol many years ago because I thought it would go down well. Over 100 workshops later and it has become a worldwide classic. Clients have come on this workshop from all corners of the globe and I’ve ensured it has lived up to expectations. Your learning experience is paramount to me. I have an honest approach to sharing my knowledge and skills gleaned over 35 years. Be prepared to soak up invaluable tips and information because these skills will give you the confidence you need to take your photography to the next level.

I am kind, sharing and patient. I take care to communicate in a way that reaches every level. I won’t leave you struggling if you are lost in camera menus and I won’t ignore you if you are quietly getting great photographs. What I’ll do is to show you how to build rapport and communicate with our model to make structured poses look quite relaxed and natural. Nothing is left to chance. Everything has a purpose and I’ll share with you how I style each shot. I have an understanding of light that I’m well known for and I’ll teach you how I see the light. Once you know what to look for everything becomes easier. If we are using the flash we will be recreating a striking natural light look. This attention to detail will ensure you capture portfolio grade images and feel empowered to capture fabulous photographs on your own after the workshop too.

My workshops are not just about learning, they are fun, creative adventures.  You will leave this workshop a more confident photographer with images to be proud of and memories to last a lifetime.

Reviews from previous participants of Damien Lovegrove’s workshops

What can I say?

The day with Damien was amazing, full of information on lighting and set-ups with a stunning model who was very professional indeed. Discovering useful shooting locations that I would never have thought would work through to camera and technique advice I found the whole experience absorbing and entertaining in equal measure.

Some of my images taken on the day are my best to date and I will most certainly be investing in the simple lighting set-up that Damien was using on the day. Can’t wait to put some of what I have learnt into practice.

Think my next aim is to spend some time with Damien in his studio or learning about multiple lighting set-ups and working with a model in a studio environment.

Five stars are not enough, ten would be more like it!

I love Damien’s work so to get the opportunity to spend a day in Bristol passing on his knowledge was a dream. A brilliant day, took me out of my comfort zone and came away with new ideas for urban photography. Would definitely recommend a day with Damien and would do it again if the opportunity arises. Definitely 5*

An absolutely outstanding day spent with Damien and model Veronique on Urban Portraits. The shoot was not rushed and every one of our small group was given ample time to get their shots in the bag. Damien’s style of teaching is second to none, and his ability to impart knowledge in a totally relaxed manner means that you walk away, with a great understanding of what you’ve learned. Some of my long-standing lighting “theories” were turned on their head, and the quality of the resulting images were just stunning. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has a genuine desire to take their outdoor portraits to the next level, you will be delighted with what you can achieve.

I had waited a long time to be able to attend one of Damiens workshops. From the moment I signed up I was impressed by the speed of response and the care and attention to detail in the pre-workshop communications and the day itself was very well organised and executed to ensure we got the maximum benefit from our day and Damien is so enthusiastic. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Brilliant day produced by a profession enthusiastic and passionate photographer. Damien makes it so easy to get interested in the subject he is teaching. He is patient and helpful throughout the day and I have ended up with some great photos of the day. The small team of 5 was ideal for the shoot and it was great to associate with such a nice group. I cannot finish without complimenting DL on the choice of model (Veronique). She was beautiful and most of all very accommodating letting us get our shots in, nothing was too much trouble for her. I am now asking myself why it took me to long to engage with Damien and look forward to our next meet.
