Have fun taking photographs that pop

Workshop Time: 9.30am – 5.00pm
Event Leader: Damien Lovegrove
Genres: Fashion and Beauty Portraits
Group size: 6 Photographers
Professional Model: Madeleine Majdal
Makeup Artist: Brooke
Location: Tonwek event space, Lausen

We have exclusive use of the whole of Tonwerk including the big hall and the basement studio. Refreshments and a light lunch are also included so we can relax and enjoy our day.

Is this for me? Don’t worry if you do not have extensive knowledge of shooting with flash, after all, you are here to learn. As long as you are comfortable working in manual mode and can change the ISO, shutter speed and aperture independently on your camera you will be fine on this workshop. I will share my settings as we go and help you dial in the settings that suit your taste.

Lighting matters: I’ll show you how to find and use beautiful natural light. We will then use the ambient light as one element in our lighting mix and might well remove it from our shots completely. Tonwerk will become our studio.

I will provide all the lighting equipment and flash triggers that we will use during the shoot. We will be using a selection of Godox flash units and some continuous light sources from Lupolux. We might even get to use my smoke machine.

Lenses: I will be using one zoom lens and two prime lenses. My zoom is the equivalent of 24-50mm on full-frame and the prime lenses are both telephoto and are the equivalent of 85mm and 200mm on full-frame. If you have a monopod and are comfortable using it then feel free to bring one, If you are used to working with a tripod feel free to bring it. If your lenses have OIS or VR, or your camera body IBIS or anti-shake, then you will not need a monopod or tripod.

Location, location, location

Our location is Tonwerk, a tastefully refurbished brick factory. The history and industrial past of Lausen lives on in the fabric of this building. Situated just 50m from Lausen Train Station and 23km from Basel, Tonwerk is perfectly placed for easy access.

The facilities onsite at Tonwerk Studios are perfect for our needs ensuring that we can shoot in a safe, warm and clean environment.

We will use the small details in the building as low key backgrounds. We will then bring other elements into the focus plane for beauty shots and then shoot the big wide shots that this vast space can deliver.

What you will take away from the day

You will come away from this Fashion Portraits workshop in Switzerland feeling immensely inspired and motivated.

Expect a full training day with high-energy ‘let’s make it happen’ attitude as well as my usual bucketful of enthusiasm.

“My workshops are not just about learning, they are fun, creative moments generating memories to last a lifetime.” Damien Lovegrove

Damien Lovegrove

I aim to be kind, sharing and patient. I take care to communicate in a way that reaches every level. I won’t leave you struggling if you are lost in camera menus and I won’t ignore you if you are quietly getting great photographs. What I’ll do is to show you how to build rapport and communicate with our model to make structured poses look quite relaxed and natural. Nothing is left to chance. Everything has a purpose and I’ll share with you how I style each shot. I have an understanding of light that I’m well known for and I’ll teach you how I see the light. Once you know what to look for everything becomes easier. Without the constrains of having to create ‘natural’ looks we can really push the boat out and use flash in a striking and vibrant way.

Urban portraits taken in Bristol by Damien Lovegrove

Fashionable portraits can use dramatic, threatical lighting because the lighting doesn’t have to pretend to be naturally occuring. We are released from the ties of convention to let our imaginations run riot. “If it looks good, it is good”Damien Lovegrove

Reviews from previous participants of Damien Lovegrove’s workshops

What can I say?

The day with Damien was amazing, full of information on lighting and set-ups with a stunning model who was very professional indeed. Discovering useful shooting locations that I would never have thought would work through to camera and technique advice I found the whole experience absorbing and entertaining in equal measure.

Some of my images taken on the day are my best to date and I will most certainly be investing in the simple lighting set-up that Damien was using on the day. Can’t wait to put some of what I have learnt into practice.

Think my next aim is to spend some time with Damien in his studio or learning about multiple lighting set-ups and working with a model in a studio environment.

Five stars are not enough, ten would be more like it!

I love Damien’s work so to get the opportunity to spend a day in Bristol passing on his knowledge was a dream. A brilliant day, took me out of my comfort zone and came away with new ideas for urban photography. Would definitely recommend a day with Damien and would do it again if the opportunity arises. Definitely 5*

An absolutely outstanding day spent with Damien and model Veronique on Urban Portraits. The shoot was not rushed and every one of our small group was given ample time to get their shots in the bag. Damien’s style of teaching is second to none, and his ability to impart knowledge in a totally relaxed manner means that you walk away, with a great understanding of what you’ve learned. Some of my long-standing lighting “theories” were turned on their head, and the quality of the resulting images were just stunning. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has a genuine desire to take their outdoor portraits to the next level, you will be delighted with what you can achieve.

I had waited a long time to be able to attend one of Damiens workshops. From the moment I signed up I was impressed by the speed of response and the care and attention to detail in the pre-workshop communications and the day itself was very well organised and executed to ensure we got the maximum benefit from our day and Damien is so enthusiastic. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Brilliant day produced by a profession enthusiastic and passionate photographer. Damien makes it so easy to get interested in the subject he is teaching. He is patient and helpful throughout the day and I have ended up with some great photos of the day. The small team of 5 was ideal for the shoot and it was great to associate with such a nice group. I cannot finish without complimenting DL on the choice of model (Veronique). She was beautiful and most of all very accommodating letting us get our shots in, nothing was too much trouble for her. I am now asking myself why it took me to long to engage with Damien and look forward to our next meet.
