Other useful information

The H10 Ocean Suites hotel in Corralejo is the suggested tour hotel and the place we will meet on each of the three mornings of the workshop. There is accommodation in Corralejo to suit all budgets and the town is quite compact with easy walking to all areas. We will have an early start on the second workshop day so that we can shoot at a popular location before it opens to the public.
We will get around the island in two hire cars. There will not be much driving to be done on the workshop days and we will arrange car sharing nearer the time to make it as convenient as we can for you.

Experience Level

This workshop will suit intermediate to advanced photographers. If you know how to adjust manual settings on your camera you will be fine. No previous experience of portraiture or working with off-camera flash is required. I’ll be directing our model and will show you how to communicate in a way that keeps the photographs looking relaxed and natural. You will become a more confident photographer by attending this workshop. Especially when it comes to photographing people.

Camera Kit Suggestions

  • A Mirrorless camera or DSLR
  • A variety of lenses covering the equivelent of 24mm to 200mm on full frame
  • A tripod and ND filters for optional long exposure landscapes
  • A camera cleaning kit. (It is windy and sandy on Fuerteventura)

Lighting kit

I’ll will supply all the lighting kit needed for this workshop. In a lot of instances we will be using a Godox AD600 with a remote head, stand and a boom arm. I’ll have an 18cm reflector and diffuser for the flash plus a spare battery. I may well bring an AD200 with me too. I will supply dedicated flash triggers for each of the makes of camera in our group. I currently have triggers for Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus. If your camera isn’t listed there then do not dispair. There is even a trigger for Pentax but I’ve not got it yet.

Meet your tutor - Damien Lovegrove

Fuerteventura is a relaxed place where we can get creative and shoot fabulous photographs. I’ve spent many days shooting fashion and beauty on this island over the past 20 years or so and I have a lot of craft skills and a passion for photography that I can’t wait to share with you.

I will teach you my methods of shooting flash in daylight to create fabulous fashion magazine-style images and we will have a lot of fun along the way.
You will get to see my unique way of distilling the landscape in front of me. The way I isolate elements and plan the picture composition with viewpoint and lens angle. I will explain my vision for the tonality in the frame using the balance of lighting and exposure.
This workshop is based at the coastal town of Corralejo in the North of the island because it has plentiful accommodation and good restaurants on hand. Don’t forget to bring a hat and sun cream. This will be an epic three days.

  • All instruction
  • The services of a professional model

And another thing...

I took the picture of Carla Monaco in the banner at the top of the page on my last workshop in Fuerteventura. It was the middle of the day with the sun high behind her. I could have darkened the background and sky to make the shot more dramatic but I chose to keep the shot bright and light. I lit Carla with an off-camera flash head rigged just above the camera. We will be visiting the same sand dunes this time around for sure.

After looking into his work to create magical classic Hollywood looks straight out of the camera without much editing using continuous lights, I was very much in love with his photography techniques and lighting skills.
During our 1:1 Training, Damien explained his lighting techniques which are sometimes very subtle yet...
